2007 Schedule

Academic WorldQuest 2007!
The team of students from Daniel Hand High School in Madison, CT took 1st place at the national Academic WorldQuest (AWQ) competition in Washington, DC on Saturday March 24. The team was sponsored by the World Affairs Forum in Connecticut.
44 teams from around the council system competed in this year's competition. Hellgate High School sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Montana finished in second place, St. Andrew's High School sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Florida Palm Beaches finished in third place, Raleigh Charter High School sponsored by the International Affairs Council finished in fourth, and after a tense tiebreaker round, Charter school of Wilmington sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Wilmington finished in fifth place.
2007 is the first year all teams competed in a local competition in order to qualify for the national competition. It is also the first year that we have cash prizes generously donated by Michael Maibach and The Maibach Foundation. The four (4) members of the team and one (1) coach will win:
First Place: $1,000 each
Second Place: $500 each
Third Place: $250 each
Fourth Place: $100 each
Fifth Place: $100 each
2007 ROUNDS
Rounds with descriptions are listed below. This is not the order in which the game will be played, only the listing of round categories.
Round 1
International Financial Organizations
In this round, questions will be asked about the workings of the WTO, World Bank, and IMF.
Round 2
Global Marketplace: Cars, Tech, and Pills
This round will have questions about multinational corporations (MNC) that are important on the world stage relating to the automobile, technology, and pharmaceutical industries.
Round 3
The Arab-Israeli Conflict
Questions will be asked about events, treaties, and people relevant to the conflict since 1900.
Round 4
The Geography of Africa
Students will be asked about the physical and human geography of the continent and its territories.
Round 5
Great Decisions 2006
Questions for this round will be drawn from these Great Decisions 2006 articles.
Topics for 2006 are:
UN Reform
Brazil
Human Rights in the Age of Terrorism
The US and Iran
Global Health Pandemics and Security
Turkey
Energy Resources
China and India: Partners or Competitors
Round 6
Countries
This round will be on general knowledge questions about countries: type of government, location, leaders, history, and current events.
Round 7
Current events
This round will consist of questions on world news and world events happening in January, February, and March of 2007. To prepare, students should read the world news section of the New York Times.
Round 8
People in the News
This round will focus on world leaders and newsmakers involved in events around the time of the competition.
Round 9
The Space Age
Students will be asked about the past, present, and future of international space development.
Round 10
International Humanitarian Relief Organizations
This round will focus on the creation, development and operations of large humanitarian organizations like the International Committee of the Red Cross, CARE, and Doctors Without Borders.
